TORONTO : The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is calling on the four party leaders to allow a free vote on Bill S-5, an Act to Repeal the Long-Gun Registry.
“Regardless of their party, all MPs should be allowed to represent their constituents and vote freely on this bill,” said CTF Federal Director, Kevin Gaudet. “Partisan games and whipped voting could keep the wasteful gun registry alive. Drop the whip so that taxpayers may finally be rid of this wasteful and ineffective program.”
“If Mr. Ignatief can’t support this bill then he should allow a free vote for his MPs, as he did on the budget. Mr. Ignatief has said he believes in smaller, more efficient government. He can demonstrate that by allowing a free vote on this bill,” said Gaudet.
In 2002, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation delivered over 14,000 signatures demanding the program be audited by the Auditor General. It was, and the findings revealed astounding waste estimated to exceed $2-billion. In 2005, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation delivered an additional 28,000 signed petitions to Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day demanding the gun-registry be shut down.
